Chill a coupe glass.
Combine the cognac, rye and sweet vermouth in a mixing glass.
Add two dashes of Angostura bitters.
Add ice and stir for 25 seconds until well chilled.
Strain into the chilled coupe and express a lemon twist over the surface.
Appears in Jerry Thomas's 1887 Bartender's Guide. The split base is the whole idea: neither spirit dominates, and the drink tastes older and more complex than a straight Manhattan without being harder to make.
