Combine the rye, sweet vermouth and Bénédictine in a mixing glass.
Add two dashes of Angostura bitters.
Add ice and stir for 25–30 seconds until well chilled.
Strain into a chilled coupe.
Express a lemon twist over the surface and drop it in.
Named for the Baltimore horse race and dating to the 1930s. Bénédictine is doing the same job here that it does in a Vieux Carré or a Monte Carlo — at 7.5ml it is seasoning, and at 15ml it takes the drink over. Start low.
