Fill an old-fashioned glass with crushed ice.
Combine the aged rum, orange curaçao, lemon juice and raspberry syrup in a shaker.
Add ice and shake hard for 10 seconds.
Strain over the crushed ice and churn briefly with a bar spoon.
Top with more crushed ice and garnish with fresh berries and a lemon wheel.
Printed in Jerry Thomas's Bar-Tender's Guide in 1862, making it one of the earliest recorded rum mixed drinks. It anticipates the tiki template — rum, citrus, curaçao, syrup, crushed ice — by roughly seventy years.
