Fill a highball glass with ice.
Add the bourbon and two dashes of Angostura bitters.
Top with cold cloudy apple cider.
Stir once to combine.
Garnish with an apple slice if you have one, or nothing at all.
Recorded in Jerry Thomas's 1862 Bar-Tender's Guide and drunk in America long before that, originally with rum and hard cider. Cloudy unfiltered cider is what makes it; clear apple juice turns it thin and sugary.
