Gin Rickey skapades i Washington D.C. på 1880-talet och uppkallades efter den demokratiske lobbyisten Colonel Joe Rickey – ursprungsreceptet byggde på bourbon, men ginversionen tog över helt och hållet och blev så omtyckt att drinken utsågs till D.C:s officiella cocktail år 2011. Till skillnad från en gimlet eller en Tom Collins innehåller en Rickey inget socker alls, vilket gör den till en av de mest genuint torra och uppfriskande highballdrinkarna i hela klassikerskaran.
