Chill a coupe glass thoroughly.
Combine the gin, dry vermouth and absinthe in a mixing glass.
Add ice and stir for 25–30 seconds until very cold.
Strain into the chilled coupe.
Serve without garnish.
Associated with Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The name is not subtle and neither is the drink: at roughly a third alcohol by volume it is one of the strongest cocktails in common circulation. Stir it longer than feels right — the dilution is structural.
