Created in 1949 by Belgian barman Gustave Tops at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, reportedly in honor of Perle Mesta, the U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg. The 'Black' refers to the coffee liqueur; add cream and it becomes a White Russian.
