Chill a coupe glass.

Combine the rye, dry vermouth, lemon juice and grenadine in a shaker.

Created at Harry's New York Bar in Paris in January 1924, days after a Boston competition coined "scofflaw" for those who ignored Prohibition. The drink was a deliberate needle at American temperance, served to Americans who had crossed an ocean to get it.
