Add four dashes of Angostura bitters to a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
Roll the glass to coat the inside, then discard any excess.
Stir the gin over ice for 20 seconds, or pour it straight from the freezer.
Strain into the prepared glass.
Serve without garnish, very cold.
Angostura was carried aboard Royal Navy ships as a medicine for seasickness; officers took it in gin because that was what was to hand. Plymouth gin is the traditional choice, being the Navy's own. Serve it colder than you think is necessary.
