Chill a coupe glass.
Combine the mezcal, elderflower liqueur, sweet vermouth and lemon juice in a shaker.
Add ice and shake hard for 10 seconds.
Fine-strain into the chilled coupe.
Express a lemon twist over the surface and discard it.
Created by Misty Kalkofen in Boston in the late 2000s, named for the Habsburg archduke who briefly and disastrously ruled Mexico. Punt e Mes rather than ordinary sweet vermouth — the extra bitterness is doing real structural work.
