Place a copper coin at the bottom of a coffee mug.
Pour 150ml of freshly brewed strong black coffee into the mug until the coin is no longer visible.
Slowly pour 60ml of aquavit into the mug until the coin becomes visible again through the liquid.
Serve immediately while hot.
The copper coin method is the traditional way to gauge the correct spirit-to-coffee ratio - the coin disappears in dark coffee and reappears as the clear aquavit dilutes the opacity, making it a charming and practical folk measure. Aquavit is the definitive spirit here; its caraway and dill botanicals complement the roasted bitterness of the coffee in a way vodka cannot match.
