From the Bartender

The modern Gimlet is made with fresh lime juice and simple syrup, but the original called for Rose's lime cordial - a preserved sweetened lime juice used by the British Royal Navy to prevent scurvy. Using fresh lime and syrup separately gives you far greater control over balance and a noticeably brighter, more vibrant result.
