Combine the gin, dry vermouth, sweet vermouth, Grand Marnier and orange juice in a shaker.
Add a dash of orange bitters.
Add ice and shake hard for 10–12 seconds.
Fine-strain into the chilled coupe and express an orange twist over the top.
From the Savoy Cocktail Book, 1930, where it appears in two versions: "curled" with orange curaçao and "straight" with Grand Marnier. This is the straight one. Despite the six ingredients it is a gentle drink — barely stronger than a glass of wine.
