Add the dark rum, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice and shake hard for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and diluted.
Double strain through a Hawthorne strainer and fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe glass.
Express a grapefruit twist over the surface, run it around the rim, and place it on the edge of the glass to garnish.
The grapefruit juice does double duty here - its natural bitterness echoes the molasses character of dark rum far better than it would with a lighter white rum, making spirit selection critical to the drink's balance. Keep the simple syrup restrained; the goal is brightness, not sweetness.
