Chill a coupe glass.
Combine the cognac, Calvados and sweet vermouth in a mixing glass.
Add ice and stir for 25–30 seconds until well chilled.
Strain into the chilled coupe.
Express a lemon twist over the surface and discard it.
Printed in the Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930 alongside the far more famous No. 2, with Craddock's note that it should be taken before eleven in the morning "or whenever steam and energy are needed". Entirely different in character from its sibling.
