From the Bartender

The Tuxedo originates from the Tuxedo Club in New York circa the 1880s and is considered one of the earliest recorded Martini variations. Old Tom Gin is essential here - its subtle sweetness bridges the gap between the dry vermouth and the maraschino in a way that London Dry cannot replicate.
