Named after Ward Eight, a voting district of Boston notorious for political corruption. While widely attributed to bartender Tom Hussion at Locke-Ober Café in November 1898, historical accounts are conflicting, with some suggesting a different bartender or a later creation date in 1903. The cocktail's exact origin remains somewhat debated and unverified, despite its early appearance in The Cocktail Book (1913) and Robert Vermeire's Cocktails (1922).
