Place 3 fresh mint sprigs into a julep cup and add the powdered sugar and water.
Gently muddle just once or twice to express the mint oils without bruising the leaves.
Fill the cup completely with cracked or crushed ice.
Pour the bourbon over the ice and stir well until the outside of the cup frosts over, about 30 seconds.
Top with additional crushed ice to form a dome.
Garnish with a fresh mint sprig, held close to the nose so the aroma is part of every sip. Serve with a short straw.
